MILLENNIUM WOOD

In the year 2000, to commemorate the new Millennium, the villagers of Ash got together to plan and plant a new wood for the benefit of the village. The site was 4 acres of rough grassland close to Ash Primary School. The land was purchased by Ash Parish Council from Somerset County Council.

Five years ago the Parish Council agreed to appoint a manager for the wood.  A strategy for the development and maintenance of the wood was prepared,  It’s main aims are Amenity – Nature Conservation – Community Involvement – Sustainability.

Situated next to the school, the Millennium Wood is a great asset to the village.
Volunteers are most welcome.

CONSULTATION OF ASH PARISHIONERS
Designation of Ash Millennium Wood as a “Local Nature Reserve”
Ash Parish Council proposes to declare Ash Millennium Wood as a “Local Nature Reserve” (LNR). We would like to hear the views of people who live in the Parish on the proposal.

Local Nature Reserves are areas of locally important natural heritage intended to give better opportunities to learn about and enjoy nature close to where people live. Local authorities (including Parish Councils) select and declare LNRs using powers under national legislation. These sites then receive protection through local planning policies that aim to resist development which would adversely affect them. Once declared Local Authorities are responsible for making arrangements for the appropriate management of the site. Further details can be found at:

Local nature reserves: setting up and management – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Declaration of a LNR supports the PC’s commitment to help nature recovery (as outlined in its Biodiversity Policy) through protecting and enhancing the diversity and quality of the wildlife which is already present. It will reflect the effort invested by the Millennium Wood Management Group and local volunteers into management of the site for nature, recreation and education. The management plan for the site will also encourage greater involvement and participation by volunteers and users in learning about and managing the site’s special habitats and species. It would support the gaining of external grants and funding to support enhancements. A copy of the current management plan can be found on the Ash village website at:

Ash wins prestigious Green Flag Community Award 2020

ASH MILLENNIUM WOOD RECEIVES ANOTHER GREEN FLAG AWARD

Congratulations and thanks from Ash Parish Council to Mick Wooden and the other volunteers for the excellent job they do in managing Ash Millennium Wood on behalf of the council.

Ash Millennium Wood is one of only 14 sites in the South West to receive a Green Flag Community Award this year. The “Mystery Shopper” judge concluded that the wood is “A wonderful site that just seems to get things right with a modest mix. The array of habitats, learning opportunities and informal activities make it a hit with families and dog walkers alike. Well done to everyone involved in maintaining this fantastic community site for all the residents and schools that value it.” More about the Green Flag Award at: https://greenflagaward.org/
