WASTE AND RECYCLING

Household Collections
Refuse and Recycling household collections in our area are carried out by the Somerset Waste Partnership on behalf of South Somerset District Council.

You can keep up to date with changes by following the link below which will take you to the SSDC website.  My Waste Services or My Collection Day Calendar at somersetwaste.gov.uk (tip: postcode with gap AB1 2CD).

FESTIVE RECYCLING WHEN AND WHERE
The festive fortnight always means changes to collections and recycle sites.

Recycle sites stay on their usual weekly schedules but all sites close on three
days: Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
PS: Want your Christmas and New Year recycling and rubbish taken?
Please “park smart” so your collection crews and their trucks can get through.
WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR REAL CHRISTMAS TREE
Aside from using it in your wildlife corner or chipping it to add to your compost bin, your tree can be dropped off at any recycle site. Garden waste subscribers can leave their tree – up to six feet with decorations removed – out for their first collection in 2022.
And, for a donation, there are Somerset charity tree collections.
Around Yeovil and elsewhere, St Margaret’s Hospice Care will collect trees. To book, search for “Christmas tree” at st-margarets-hospice.org.uk

South Somerset/Mendip? Bright Blue Bag A-Z … how to get it, what goes in, when collected …
Not got one? Apologies. Unless neighbour / friend / relative has a spare, order BBB now via My Waste Services at somersetwaste.gov.uk Until it arrives, carefully sort the new materials and either add them to your existing boxes or put alongside in a bag (not black sack) or box.
What goes in
• Household and food rigid plastic pots, tubs, trays, bottles – rinse, squash, tops back on.
• Cans/tins – rinse and, if safe, crush.
• Aluminium foil – rinse, scrunch.
• Aerosols – empty (not inhalers – take to pharmacy).
Yes:
• Plastic pots for yoghurt, soup, face cream, hair gel, with lids if same plastic etc.
• Plastic tubs for margarine, ice cream, laundry tablets with lids if same plastic etc.
• Plastic trays – including black plastic – for meat, ready meals, plastic punnets for fruit and mushrooms, plastic egg boxes etc.

Must:
• Remove all film covers, and cardboard sleeves etc.
• Rinse out food residues or other contents, squash-nest-stack and, if safe, crush items to fit more in. Take care with trays that contained raw meat, remove soaker pads. Then wash your hands.

• Other plastics, such as plastic toys, CD cases, car parts, coat hangers, plastic paint pots, toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, blister packs, pens.
• Expanded polystyrene, plastic packaging inserts.
• Cartons/Tetra Paks; these go in green box.
• Inhalers (take to pharmacy).
• “Compostable” food containers, cups, packaging, magazine wrappings.
• Plastic bottles or other containers from garage or garden shed.
When collected? See your printed Recycle More calendar or check all your collection days with My Collection Day at somersetwaste.gov.uk (tip: postcode with gap AB1 2CD).
Does the Bright Blue Bag need sorting? Sort black box (card and paper) and green box (cartons, glass bottles and jars), as these materials go into different truck compartments. Bright Blue Bag contents go into one compartment. But sort to get more in. Plastic bottles: rinse, squash, tops on. Plastic pots, tubs, trays: rinse, nest/stack/squash. Foil: scrunch. Cans/tins: if safe, crush. Aerosols; empty, do not crush or pierce. Heavier items at the bottom of BBB ensures helps ensure nothing gets left behind.
