CONSULTATION OF ASH PARISHIONERS
Designation of Ash Millennium Wood as a “Local Nature Reserve”
Ash Parish Council proposes to declare Ash Millennium Wood as a “Local Nature Reserve” (LNR). We would like to hear the views of people who live in the Parish on the proposal.

Local Nature Reserves are areas of locally important natural heritage intended to give better opportunities to learn about and enjoy nature close to where people live. Local authorities (including Parish Councils) select and declare LNRs using powers under national legislation. These sites then receive protection through local planning policies that aim to resist development which would adversely affect them. Once declared Local Authorities are responsible for making arrangements for the appropriate management of the site. Further details can be found at:

Local nature reserves: setting up and management – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Declaration of a LNR supports the PC’s commitment to help nature recovery (as outlined in its Biodiversity Policy) through protecting and enhancing the diversity and quality of the wildlife which is already present. It will reflect the effort invested by the Millennium Wood Management Group and local volunteers into management of the site for nature, recreation and education. The management plan for the site will also encourage greater involvement and participation by volunteers and users in learning about and managing the site’s special habitats and species. It would support the gaining of external grants and funding to support enhancements. A copy of the current management plan can be found on the Ash village website at:

Ash-Millennium-Wood-Management-Plan-2023-FINAL.pdf (ashpcsomerset.com)

We do have a small surplus of mugs which can be purchased for £5.00 each on a first come – first served basis, so don’t delay, contact us by email ashalertemails@gmail.com or 01935 825020.

OVERGROWN VEGETATION
When hedges tree or shrub overhangs the highway, pedestrians can injure themselves from the impact with the vegetation and alternatively, pedestrians can be forced towards the carriageway, which can result in an increased risk of an accident. Responsibility for cutting back vegetation lies with the landowners or occupiers of their boundary fronting the highway. The Parish Council’s responsibility is to report such matters to Somerset Highways.
Please can you check if any of your boundaries with the highway has offending growth and, if it has, make arrangements to remove any overgrown vegetation land owners must also remove any debris from the road surface to prevent nuisance and to stop it blocking surface water drainage systems.
Thank you

Ash Parish Council will as usual publish information on the village website www.ashpcsomerset.com  Facebook page Ash Alerts https://www.facebook.com/Ash-Alerts-104800641092793 and our Ash Alert email system ashalertemails@gmail.com
We recognise that not everyone has access to emails and the internet and so it goes without saying that we will also continue to communicate via the village notice boards but this will never be as timely.
